Seatbelt Harness

Home Up

Once the seat and backrest were removed….

First we removed the anchor bolts for the seatbelt located at the outer seat bottom.  Then we carefully removed the roller by the shoulder.  Lastly we removed the seatbelt receiver between the driver and the passenger and put it right in the trash.

To install, we first sized the seatbelt and determined that 6” of material needed to be cut down from each of the 4 sections (8 total with driver and passenger).  I cut off the hardware and trimmed 6” and sewn it back using 138 Dacron thread with multiple box stitch and X’d stitch (this was much more than the original stitch pattern and quality of thread).  I wanted this to be a totally custom installation so I installed the passenger side correctly but reversed the driver’s side.  The part with the cam latch was bolted back to the outer lower anchor bolts on each side.  Unfortunately, I had to rotate the driver side cam so it wasn’t upside-down.  Took some doing but details are worth the effort.

Now I also wanted to use the original GEM retractable roller from the original seatbelt so I dissected it, cleaned and oiled all parts and spooled on the new seatbelt and reinstalled on to the car.

The last lower seatbelt and last shoulder belt were bolted together into the bolts that were used originally for the old receiver mechanism.  All I needed to do was install another bracket for the shoulder belt at the highest point behind the backrest.

The last thing I did was make the outer lap belt (with the cam latch) permanently attached to the retractable shoulder belt by altering the mechanism.  This makes it much easier and less time consuming to get strapped in the car.  Many of my trips are fast, short hops to local marinas and such and I couldn’t have it take literally minutes to strap and adjust all the points of the harness.
